i grew up in between
an island and a united state
a Southern accent and Patois slang
rum cake and sweet potato pie
i grew up somewhere you won’t find on any map
instead its in the hills of my mother’s lap
even after i outgrew it
i will never outgrow her
i grew up in between
the valley of her bosom where i lay my head
her arms, her smiles, and her sharp tongue
her endless love
my home
